HUI AN : Artist Statement

When taking photographs, my process relies on three elements: the use of weather conditions, timing, and cropping space. As a photographer with great interest in the technical side of the medium, I found that weather has become one of the tools that I harness in both aspects of lighting and composition in my imagery. What may have been considered undesirable weather, such as fog or snow becomes like a filter that envelopes the natural landscape and covers any trace of human presence.

Another part of this process considers the ephemeral, that involves waiting and contemplation, returning to the same place many times and waiting to capture the right moment. The act of photography in of itself, is like the act of cutting with a knife, or sculpting, that is to remove what is not needed. That is where cropping becomes the most important tool in my work.
